With so many quitting smoking tips, it can difficult to know which ones work. In this article, we are going to share some of the unusual ways to motivate you to quit smoking through visualisation. Visualisation can be a powerful tool as it affects our mental models directly.
Despite the huge health warnings on the cigarette packets, most smokers are not motivated to stop or even cut back on their habit. This is where visualisation may need to come in. What you can do is to change some of the smoking risks you know of into pictures and to attach your emotions to them. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Bullets or Loaded Pistol
Imagine that each stick of cigarette as a bullet. Every smoke you breathe in is like loading one of these cold hard metal pieces into your mouth. If you need, you can even think of it as putting a loaded pistol into your mouth to blow your head off.
Care For Some Tar Tar Sauce
If you come across any road works, do check out the thick black liquid, called tar, which is used to surface the road. Feel the same stuff drooling down your throat into your lungs. Every drop of this toxic stuff is preventing your lungs from giving the rest of your body that life-giving oxygen.
Fire It Up
Every time you light up, take a look at the flame. Visualise how a huge flame is burning up within your body as the insides of you is dying from the toxic you ingested.
Dying Smoker
Have you ever seen a dying smoker? If not, you can imagine one who is fighting for their life and breath. They are behaving as if someone has put an invisible bag over their heads. Think of how you will look the same way in a couple of decades later. This quitting smoking tip may sound morbid but has been proven to be very effective.
Hopefully, this simple exercise can make you sit up every time you smoke. More importantly, it should be able to create that picture that brings whatever joy you have in smoking to zilch. While these simple quitting smoking tips may take a little practice, once you have gotten the hang of it, it will be easy to apply them in your life.
